Ceramic Piezoelectric Materials Piezoelectric elements can convert electrical signals and mechanical signals to each other. Piezoelectric ceramic components of a certain shape are mainly made by sintering PbTiO3-PbZrO3 system (PZT). Even sintered bodies can obtain the piezoelectricity of single crystals through polarization. The main uses of piezoelectric components are spark plugs and resonators. The resonator acts as a radio wave filter that selectively passes a specific frequency, and is an indispensable component of a tuning circuit such as television (TV) and radio.
Ceramic semiconductor materials In ceramics, there are many semiconductors. The property of resistance changing with temperature can be used for non-linear resistance. Negative temperature coefficient nonlinear resistors (NTC nonlinear resistors) decrease in resistance as the temperature rises, and have general semiconductor characteristics. Iron-based metal oxide ceramics are chemically and thermally stable, so they can be used for non-linear resistors to control the temperature in a wide range. In contrast, the component called a positive temperature coefficient thermistor (PTC thermistor) uses semiconductorized BaTiO3 ceramics. This kind of ceramic has a sharp increase in resistance at the phase transition temperature. If it is used as a resistance heating element, it can automatically control the temperature around the phase transition temperature, which is very convenient.
When voltage is applied to piezoelectric ceramics, it will produce mechanical deformation with changes in voltage and frequency. On the other hand, when piezoelectric ceramics are vibrated, an electric charge is generated. Using this principle, when an electrical signal is applied to a vibrator composed of two piezoelectric ceramics or a piezoelectric ceramic and a metal sheet, the so-called bimorph element, ultrasonic waves will be emitted due to bending vibration. On the contrary, when ultrasonic vibration is applied to the piezoelectric bimorph element, an electrical signal is generated. Based on the above effects, piezoelectric ceramics can be used as ultrasonic sensors.
